Here’s an update on my eye problems. Last week the optician was here for an hour testing my eyes. And he found that more blood vessels behind the eye have burst. Also that the back of the eye was swollen, and that I've definitely lost the sight in the very centre of the eye. So he's writing to my doctor and I have to call the doctor to see if he wants to increase any of the medications. The optician thought a lot of the sight problems might be caused by hypertension, but there's no age related macular degeneration, and my long distance sight is still fine.
Last week I also had computer problems. Very stupidly, without checking any forums, I allowed Microsoft Update to work away in the background with the Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Now, while it was installing it re-booted itself and seemed to take forever to finish. After which I found that I couldn’t load any browser at all, even though I was connected to the net. So I had to un-install it and go back to a Restore Point. That seems to have cured my problems, although I also found that my Thunderbird email client wouldn’t allow outgoing mail. It was fine with incoming emails, but even after I’d checked to see that all the settings were correct I simply couldn’t send anything out. Thank goodness it’s not my only email client. However, after a couple of days I found that Thunderbird had righted itself and is now working normally again. Very strange.
After checking some forums I read that I’m not the only person to have had problems with the service pack! And, compared to what happened to some people, I got off lightly. I certainly won’t be downloading the Windows 7 SP1, and in the future I’ll be checking the forums before I download any more service packs.
Now, my only computer "gripe" is the new Firefox 4 browser version. I simply don't really like the way that things have changed in its layout. I guess I'll get used to it, and I don't want to go back to a previous version.
Finally, to make you smile, I regularly check that my Plug-Ins are up to date. For many months I've been having a problem installing the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. A friend was here while I was trying to do it a couple of days ago and imagine my surprise when they said I had to check the box to say I agreed to the terms and conditions. What box? In the black and red Adobe window that comes up there's a tiny little box you have to tick to allow the installation. Of course, with my eyes and, I suspect, with those of many senior citizens, it's impossible to see that box! Once I'd ticked it there was no problem at all. And I continue to hate Adobe - even more than I hate Microsoft.

A useful fall-back position here is to download a CD-ROM image of Knoppix Linux and burn this onto a CD. This is a Linux distribution designed explicitly to boot and run only from a CD; it cannot install to the hard drive.
What it is useful for is giving you a working machine back if the Windows install happens to break its self, a working system which won't overwrite the Windows system.
Thanks Dan. Now if I could only understand the dowload options that Knoppix.net sent me to over on the Nopper.net mirrors .........
What I really need is just a simple link where I can download and then burn to CD :)
